This Is Why We Make Art

Jul 2, 2026

I want to tell you something I believe with every cell in my body.

Creativity is not a hobby. It is not a talent reserved for the gifted few. It is not a productivity tool or a form of self-improvement. It is not something you do when you have free time.

Creativity is medicine. Ancient, accessible, and yours by birthright.

What I Have Witnessed in Fifteen Years

Here is what I have witnessed in fifteen years of art therapy practice: people arrive at our studio unable to speak about what has happened to them. The words don’t exist, or they’ve been locked away for so long that language feels like the wrong tool entirely. And then they pick up a brush, or tear a piece of paper, or press a crayon into a page — and something moves.

Not fixed. Not solved. Moved.

That movement is the beginning of healing.

The Clinical Science Behind Art Therapy

This is not a metaphor. Art therapy is a clinical, evidence-based modality with its own graduate training requirements and national licensing standards, governed in the United States by the Art Therapy Credentials Board. The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art-making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals.

Research consistently demonstrates its effectiveness in reducing trauma symptoms, improving emotional regulation, and supporting eating disorder recovery — precisely because the brain processes visual and creative expression through different neural pathways than verbal language. The body participates. The nervous system responds. Images can carry what words cannot.

This is why art therapy reaches people that talk therapy alone sometimes cannot. It is not a replacement for other forms of care — it is a doorway that opens something different.

How We Practice Art Therapy at Fox + Feather

At Fox + Feather, art is not an add-on to therapy. It is the therapy.

It is how we help clients express what has been unspeakable, reconnect with their bodies, move through eating disorder recovery, process sexual trauma, and build a relationship with themselves that is rooted in truth rather than fear. We serve female-identifying clients, trans-femme individuals, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, ages 8 and older, across the Connecticut Shoreline and via telehealth for anyone located anywhere in CT.

You do not need to be an artist to benefit from this. You never have. You just need a willingness to let your hand move before your mind decides what it means.

FAQ

What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a clinical, evidence-based mental health profession that uses the creative process of art-making to support emotional, psychological, and physical well-being. It is governed in the United States by the Art Therapy Credentials Board and requires graduate-level training and licensure. Learn more on our Art Therapy Services page.

Do I need to be artistic to benefit from art therapy?
No. Art therapy is not about making good art — it is about using the process of making to access, express, and process what is difficult to reach through words alone. No prior art experience is needed or expected.

How is art therapy different from regular therapy?
Traditional talk therapy works primarily through verbal language. Art therapy engages the body, the nervous system, and visual-creative neural pathways that verbal processing does not reach. This makes it especially effective for trauma, dissociation, and eating disorders where the body holds what words cannot fully express.

What conditions does Fox + Feather treat with art therapy?
We specialize in eating disorder recovery and trauma healing, including sexual trauma and PTSD. We also support clients navigating anxiety, depression, identity, and life transitions. Our individual art therapy sessions are tailored to each client’s needs.
